Peking University Shenzhen Hospital(PKUSZH) is a Class A tertiary comprehensive public hospital invested and built by Shenzhen Municipal Government. PKUSZH is located in the central area of Futian District and was completed and opened at the end of 1999. In October 2000, Shenzhen Municipal Government signed a cooperation agreement with Peking University, setting a precedent for close cooperation between hospitals and universities in China. The hospital was incorporated into the management system of Peking University Affiliated Hospitals and renamed ”Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. The hospital covers an area of 59,000 square meters and its current total construction area is nearly 220,000 square meters. Known as “the most beautiful hospital in Shenzhen”, it is evergreen all year round and it is a wall-less hospital with “zero-parking”on the ground.
As of December 31st,2022, the hospital has more than 3,500 employees, of which 81.6% are health technicians, more than 780 are senior professionals and more than 900 are postgraduates. The hospital currently has 113 high-level talents, including 3 national leading talents, 10 local-level leading talents, 6 overseas high-level B-type talents, 36 reserve talents, 30 overseas high-level C-type talents and 12 special appointments for A, C and D positions.
The hospital is a national pilot unit for establishing and improving a modern hospital management system, a key construction hospital in the third batch of Guangdong Province’s high-level hospitals and a demonstration hospital for Guangdong Province’s public hospital reform and high-quality development. In the performance assessment of national tertiary public hospitals, the hospital has been among the top 100 in the country for 4 consecutive years( 61st in 2018; 59th in 2019; 63rd in 2020; 53rd in 2021) and has been awarded an A+ grade.
(I) Regional emergency and critical care centers with high-quality development.
As of December 31st ,2022, PKUSZH has 1,800 beds available and 56 clinical and medical technology departments. It has large medical equipment such as CT, MR, da Vinci surgical robot, Truebeam2.7 linear accelerator and PET-CT, with a total value of 2 billion yuan. In 2022, PKUSZH offered medical services to 2.785 million outpatients and 99,500 inpatients, with an annual inpatient surgery and operation volume of 73,700 times. Minimally invasive surgery accounted for 27.72% of discharged patients and the average length of stay was 5.37 days. According to the DRGs data of Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, from 2017 to 2021, the hospital's case mix index (CMI) ranked among the top 10 in Guangdong for five consecutive years and ranked 7th in the province in 2021. In 2020, 5 emergency and first aid diseases and 13 malignant tumor surgery-related indicators routinely monitored by Shenzhen municipal hospitals were at the forefront of Shenzhen. Hospital was awarded "National Demonstration Hospital for Further Improving Medical Services".
PKUSZH continues to build brand disciplines. Urology Department is a national key discipline of the Ministry of Education; Stomatology Department is a high-level clinical key specialty of Guangdong Province; the Critical Care Medicine Department, Endocrinology Department, Nephrology Department, Dermatology Department, Medical Imaging Department, Medical Laboratory Department, Urology Department, Breast Surgery Department, Orthopedics Department and General Surgery Department have been approved as Guangdong Province's clinical key specialties. 16 disciplines including Pathology, Otolaryngology, Rheumatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Stomatology, Endocrinology, Dermatology, Nephrology, Digestive Diseases, Cardiovascular Diseases, Geriatrics, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Reproductive Medicine and Health Management have been nominated for Fudan Hospital Rankings South China Specialty Reputation List.
Focusing on the treatment of difficult, critical and severe diseases, PKUSZH, as a national advanced stroke center, a demonstration base of Guangdong Chest Pain Center, a Shenzhen training base of the National Severe Trauma Standardized Treatment Training Center and a member of China Trauma Treatment Alliance, has established 55 MDT (multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment) teams to undertake the treatment of critically ill patients in the region. PKUSZH is the municipal hospital with the most emergency car dispatches in Shenzhen. It undertakes the treatment of critically ill pregnant women with combined internal and external diseases in this city.
In Shenzhen, we pioneered the use of cutting-edge technologies such as CAR-T cell therapy for lymphoma, preimplantation genetic testing technology and "ovarian cryopreservation for fertility protection", providing more comprehensive and systematic treatment for patients with major, difficult and severe diseases such as malignant tumors. The Department of Geriatrics and the Department of Sports Medicine respectively became the Guangdong branch center of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases and the network unit of the National Clinical Research Center for Orthopedics and Sports Rehabilitation. 24 "Sanming Projects" teams were settled in Shenzhen to carry out high-tech medical technologies and special service projects.
(II) University affiliated hospitals with high level of scientific and educational innovation
Relying on Shenzhen Peking University-Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Medical Center, we have built a medical research and innovation system integrating "basic research + clinical research + translational application" , established three major research institutes, namely "Precision Medicine Research Institute, Clinical Research Institute, Smart Hospital Research Institute" and created high-level scientific research platforms such as central laboratories, stem cell and cell biological treatment platforms, intelligent biological sample libraries and 12 specialized research institutes such as the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in order to realize the medical research closed loop of finding mechanisms in basic research, verifying results in clinical research and finding markets in translation offices.
As the first hospital in Shenzhen to obtain national stem cell technology clinical application research qualification and project access, PKUSZH has 29 drug GCP qualification professional groups and 53 medical device GCP qualification professional groups, and has an interventional and stem cell treatment center and a phase I clinical research ward. It has carried out a number of technical studies such as clinical research on stem cell treatment of type 2 diabetes. Hospital's Clinical study on successful one-time cure of lymphoma combined with systemic lupus erythematosus using CAR-T caused a sensation at home and abroad. Clinical research on CAR-T cells for the treatment of liver cancer and other malignant tumors has also been approved by the nation.
PKUSZH currently has the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Orthopedic Biomaterials (national laboratory) and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics as well as more than 10 other provincial and municipal scientific research platforms. In recent years, hospital has won more than 10 awards at all levels, including one 2nd prize in natural sciences from the Ministry of Education,one 1st prize in natural sciences from Guangdong Province, two 3rd prizes in Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, two 2nd prizes in Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Awards and one 3rd prize in Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Awards. The STEM values of 15 disciplines have entered the top 100 in the country, among which stomatology ranks 18th in the country. Department of Stomatology has become the Shenzhen Oral Disease Clinical Medical Research Center and Department of Dermatology has become a sub-center construction unit of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Skin and Immune Diseases.
As an affiliated hospital of Peking University, PKUSZH undertakes the teaching task of clinical bridge courses in oral medicine of School of Medicine of Peking University and Shenzhen University. The hospital currently has 27 second-level discipline master's training sites and 9 third-level discipline doctoral training sites. There are 26 national standardized training bases for resident physicians, 4 Shenzhen standardized training bases for specialist physicians and 17 Peking University School of Medicine standardized training bases for specialist physicians, among which general medicine is a key resident training base in Guangdong Province. PKUSZH is the first provincial-level general teacher training base for standardized training of resident doctors in Shenzhen. It has a 1,705 square meters clinical skills simulation training center, which is an AHA training base equipped with laparoscope trainers, oral specialist training simulation head models, intelligent comprehensive simulators and other equipment. PKUSZH undertakes the training of nearly 1,500 undergraduate interns, graduate students, training physician, training nurse, advanced students and postdoctoral students every year.
(III) National pilot unit for smart management and efficient modern hospital management
PKUSZH is one of the first national digital demonstration hospitals. In 2017, it became a "smart hospital construction unit" in Guangdong Province and won the "smart hospital construction award" in Shenzhen. It was the first general hospital in Guangdong Province to pass level 6 of the national electronic medical record system application level grading evaluation. In 2020, the hospital passed 5B-level assessment of the national hospital information interconnection standardization maturity level .
PKUSZH has made every effort to build a series of refined management platforms such as smart outpatient clinics, smart pharmacies, smart wards and smart logistics to realize online prescription circulation, online medical insurance settlement, intelligent pre-consultation before diagnosis, robot liquid preparation and drug delivery, intelligent early warning of clinical risks, intelligent surgical grading authorization and surgical quality and health, etc. to improve medical quality, improve patients' medical experience, improve work efficiency, and realize refined hospital management. (IV) New development pattern of "one hospital with multiple campuses"
In 2019, Shenshan Clinic officially opened, becoming the first municipal medical branch in the Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone. It established a 20-minute air rescue channel to hospital headquarters, providing the same basic medical services as the hospital headquarters to the citizens of the cooperation zone. The construction of Shenshan Campus of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, which covers an area of 200,000 square meters and has a planned capacity of 800 beds, has started.
In December 2021, Shenzhen Xinhua Hospital, with an investment of 4.3 billion yuan and a planned capacity of 2,500 beds, was officially handed over to PKUSZH for operation and management. Shenzhen Xinhua hospital has been officially put into use at the end of 2024 and will implement integrated management of multiple campuses, laying the foundation for our development pattern of "one hospital, multiple campuses".
In the future, Peking University Shenzhen Hospital will follow the development strategy of "one body with two wings" version 3.0, that is, focusing on the construction of a high-level medical service system with smart hospital construction and clinical research as two wings to create a regional medical center for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area that integrates "high-level regional medical center", "international medical research and innovation center", "translational medicine and clinical research center", "national clinical training demonstration center", "hospital smart management innovation center" and "high-efficiency health management center" to provide high-quality medical and health services to citizens in Shenzhen and even surrounding areas.
